Final Solutions

New York: Random House, 1963. First edition. 50 pp. Original oatmeal cloth lettered in red and black on the spine, with the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, some minor dustmarking to cloth. Jacket slightly toned, very minor rubbing to head of spine and a short closed tear to the bottom edge of the rear panel. Overall a beautiful copy of a significant debut. The poet and critic Ernest Hilbert wrote that this book sparked "what may be the most public scandal attending a first book of American poetry in the last century aside from the turmoil that surrounded Allen Ginsberg’s Howl in the middle of the previous decade. The outrage would prove a fitting start to the career of a poet who specializes in verse that courts controversy and hones his poems until they become 'daggers that sing.'... He erupted onto the scene in a tremor of controversy that signaled the arrival of a new kind of poet, even if sui generis, and that very approach has come to define him." Item #1950
