Norfolk, CT: New Directions, 1936. First edition. Two volumes. 1936 volume: printed paper boards, no dust jacket as issued. Some rubbing and staining to boards, spine browned. Gallup states that 513 copies total were printed, of which 204 were in boards. 1937 volume: printed paper boards, with the dust jacket. Lower corners bumped and rubbed, spine edges rubbed. Jacket shows some edgewear with slight chipping at the head and tail of the spine and corners.
The first two volumes of Laughlin's enormously important anthology, published annually (irregularly) for the next fifty years. The first volume contains work by Pound, Cummings, Elizabeth Bishop (pre-dating her first book by ten years), Henry Miller, Lorine Niedecker, Wallace Stevens, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, and others. The second volume contains work by Miller, Cocteau, Niedecker, E.E. Cummings, Stein, Williams, and others. Item #2181
