Shine, Perishing Republic. Robinson Jeffers and the Tragic Sense in Modern Poetry

Boston: Bruce Humphries, 1936. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, one of 1000 copies printed. 198 pp. Red paper boards over black buckram backstrip, lettered and decorated in gilt, with the dust jacket. The jacket shows some minor rubbing but is fairly clean overall. Two newspaper articles about Gilbert's exhibition on Jeffers at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art are tipped-in on the rear endpapers and consequently browned. A fairly early and sympathetic study of Jeffers' work; in a letter to Gilbert after having read the manuscript Jeffers wrote, "I must thank you for your extremely well-done, careful, sympathetic and interesting study of my poems." An earlier letter from Jeffers is reproduced in facsimile holograph preceding the title-page. Briefly and warmly inscribed by Gilbert on the front free endpaper. Broomfield Bii22. Near fine / very good +. Item #1754
