Item #2334 Mala Noche [first edition]. Walt Curtis.

Mala Noche [first edition]

Portland: Out of the Ashes Press/The Mississippi Mud Magazine, 1977. First edition. 50, [2] pp. Printed stapled wrappers. Some staining and grubbiness to covers, interior clean. The rare chapbook by Portland's unofficial "street poet," basis for Gus Van Sant's first film. Katherine Dunn, another patron saint of Portland letters, wrote in 1984, "Curtis has long been labeled a 'street' poet. 'What does that mean?' he wonders. 'Do we live in the street? Do we sleep in the street? Do we read our poems in the street? Are we uneducated? I have a degree in English. Or do we write about the street experience? I think it's that my poems deal with real life and that's what the term 'street' means." Item #2334
