Walking Shadows. An Essay on Lotte Reiniger’s Silhouette Films
London: Published by L. and V. Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1931. First edition. [vi], 7-31 pp; four plates. Printed paper boards, spine label mounted, possibly as issued. Some browning and minor soiling to boards, endpapers toned.
Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) was a pioneer in the making of animated films. She linked the tradition of hand-cut silhouettes and shadow puppets to the making of motion pictures, and invented new techniques and effects to do so. White’s essay is based on a talk he gave at the Newport Film Society in December 1930. (He also met H.D., who was to become a mentor and of whom he played a great role in promoting later in her life, at Reiniger’s apartment in Berlin in 1931.) OCLC locates about thirty copies, a fairly small number for a regular Hogarth publication. Woolmer, A Checklist of the Hogarth Press, 275. Item #2631
